A 60-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a fatal shooting on a quiet island off Nova Scotia's South Shore.

Terry Roy Levy of Little Tancook Island appeared in Bridgewater provincial court Wednesday morning. He is accused of shooting his daughter's boyfriend, 47-year-old Terry Green.

Lunenburg County RCMP responded to a report of a deceased man on Little Tancook Island shortly before 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Police say Green's body was found in a field. They confirm he was shot and his death has been ruled a homicide.

Levy was arrested without incident shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday.

A witness tells CTV News he was rolling cigarettes while he waited for the Mounties to arrive by ferry.

Levy arrived by ferry in Chester at 11 a.m. and was placed in the back of an RCMP cruiser.

Police say the incident wasn’t random, as the victim and suspect knew one another.

Lobster fisherman James Levy says he heard three gunshots before 9 a.m.

“It’s just completely terrible, just like somebody kicked you in the guts as hard as they possible could,” says James Levy, who is the suspect’s first cousin.

“There’s two families ruined. Two families are going to suffer for the rest of their lives over this.”

Levy's neighbours describe him as eccentric, but well liked.

Little Tancook Island is roughly 1.5 kilometres long and about 1 kilometre wide. Only 16 people, including Levy, live on the island year-round.

Green was a carpenter and had been staying on the island while working on a home.

RCMP officers brought Levy back to the island on Wednesday, to walk through the crime scene.

He is expected to enter a plea on July 29.
