A Saint John man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with a fatal stabbing in the city’s west end.

Police responded to a report of an altercation at the intersection of Tower Street and Lancaster Avenue at approximately 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“The caller indicated that a fight had ensued between males out onto the street,” Saint John Police Sgt. Jay Henderson told CTV News Wednesday.

“When our uniform patrol arrived at the location they discovered two males that were seriously injured.”

Officers found a 23-year-old man and a 61-year-old man suffering from serious injuries. They were taken to Saint John Regional Hospital by ambulance.

Police say the younger man had been stabbed and died in hospital from his injuries. He has been identified as Spencer Eldridge.

The second man, Frederick Cormier Sr., remains in hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries. Police believe he was run over with a vehicle.

Anthony Beckingham, 22, is charged with assault with a weapon against Cormier Sr.

Frederick Cormier Jr., 28, is charged with second-degree murder in Eldridge’s stabbing death.

The men have yet to enter pleas. They are both due back in court next month.
