With parts of New Brunswick expected to get upwards of 20 centimetres of snow, many residents are taking precautions.

Snow started around 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon in Woodstock, N.B., and has since intensified.

Woodstock Public Works director Andrew Garnett says the town has been gearing up for the first snow for the past few weeks.

"We have everything over there lined up ready to go so just kind of wait for the snow to start falling,” said Garnett.

Ward MacDonald was outside Tuesday putting up Christmas lights to try and beat the snow.

"Because of the snow storm that's coming, the trees will look beautiful with the lights shining through, glistening off the snow," said MacDonald.

RCMP across the region are asking drivers to use caution not just when it snows, but also rain and when temperatures start to freeze.

"With a change in weather comes a change in driving behavior,” said Sgt. JP MacDougall of New Brunswick RCMP. “You want to make sure you're staying safe, you keep your speeds where they should be and drive appropriately for the conditions. If you don’t have winter tires on yet, now is the time to get those done."

As for MacDonald, he's also been gearing up for this impending storm.

"Make sure my snow blower is ready to go, make sure the shovels are by the door, the snow tires are on the cars," he said.

Areas in the southwestern part of New Brunswick will be hardest hit. Those most affected in the Maritimers can expect the snow to stop by noon Wednesday.

New Brunswick’s EMO is also cautioning residents to be careful if they are out Tuesday night and Wednesday. They’re also asking residents to be prepared in case of any power outages.
