The RCMP say two men whose bodies were found inside a Moncton apartment last month each died from a drug overdose.

Police responded to the apartment on MacAleese Avenue on Nov. 9.

Officers seized a white, crystallized powder substance from the scene. They determined the drug had been purchased online.

Police say an analysis of the substance indicates that it is a derivative of fentanyl, a very potent synthetic drug normally prescribed for pain.

The drug is considered to be very dangerous and potentially fatal.

Autopsies confirmed the men died of an overdose from the drug and foul play has been ruled out.

Police say their names of the men, aged 29 and 36, will not be released.

“Trafficking of fentanyl in RCMP service areas in New Brunswick appears to be minimal at this time,” said Codiac Regional RCMP Staff Sgt. Mark Janes.

“However, we are watching closely and taking measures to warn the public of the dangers of this drug in any form when not used under a physician’s instructions.”

The RCMP are warning the public that the drug could be in other New Brunswick communities and may be combined with other illicit drugs or consumed in a powder form.

Police say there have been six deaths linked to an accidental overdose of fentanyl in New Brunswick since 2007.
