FREDERICTON -- The New Brunswick government has announced plans to upgrade the province's mobile radio communication system.
The radio system is used by more than 3,400 people including first responders, police officers and snowplow operators.
The province says the existing system lacks coverage and does not allow agencies to communicate with each other during emergencies.
The project is expected to be completed in late 2016 and includes the construction of new communication towers along with upgrades to technology at existing towers.
Public Safety Minister Stephen Horsman says the upgrades will improve safety for officials and the public.
The province says the new system will ultimately connect New Brunswick's emergency communication network with systems in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
