A Nova Scotia paramedic already accused of sexually assaulting an elderly woman is facing new charges in connection with another reported assault.

Police received a complaint from a 32-year-old Halifax woman on Feb. 7, about a week after the alleged incident.

They say the woman fell ill on Jan. 31 and was being transported to hospital by ambulance when she claims she was sexually assaulted by a male paramedic.

James Duncan Keats turned himself in at police headquarters in Halifax Tuesday night.

Emergency Health Services says it was never informed of the allegations until Tuesday when police made the arrest.

“We are shocked by what we’ve been told by the policing agency,” says Jeff Fraser, spokesperson for Nova Scotia Emergency Health Services.

“What we will do is wait and then begin our own investigation, but a lot of that is frozen until we have some details and know where to start with the data points.”

The 47-year-old Kentville man was held in custody overnight. He is charged with sexual assault and breach of trust.

He has been suspended with pay and is due to appear in Halifax provincial court on Thursday for a bail hearing.

Keats facing charges in connection with separate incident

Keats, who has worked as a paramedic in Halifax for many years, is already facing charges in connection with a separate incident.

Police say they were investigating the first complaint made in February when they received another report of a sexual assault by a paramedic on May 28.

A 71-year-old woman from East Hants told police she had been sexually assaulted in her Rawdon home on May 26.

Police say a paramedic had been treating a male resident at the home when a second paramedic escorted the victim to another room where he indicated he was going to check her vital signs.

Instead, she told police he sexually assaulted her.

After further investigation, police believe the same paramedic had sexually assaulted the woman on a separate occasion, on Sept. 1, 2012, while she was being transported by ambulance to the hospital for medical treatment.

The incident in September was not reported.

Keats is facing two counts of sexual assault and two counts of breach of trust in connection with the alleged assault.
