FREDERICTON -- New Brunswick's power utility says it has reduced the frequency and duration of outages in the province for the first six months of this year.

NB Power says there was a 40 per cent decrease in the length of outages and a 20 per cent decrease in the number of outages for the first half of the year compared to the final six months of 2014.

CEO Gaetan Thomas says that is significant given the harsh, prolonged winter this year.

He says the utility invested millions in tree trimming in the wake of a major storm a year ago that caused severe outages.

Thomas says the company is working with a remote sensing technology to develop vegetation planning and forecasting tools.

He says that should help improve cutting practices.
