HALIFAX - Nova Scotia's new finance minister says she will continue on the same fiscal path as her predecessor.

Maureen MacDonald says she is just starting the transition from her former job as health minister to finance following a surprise cabinet shuffle Wednesday.

The change came after Graham Steele announced earlier that day that he would not run again, prompting Premier Darrell Dexter to undertake a ministerial shakeup.

MacDonald says Dexter made it clear that economic policy is set by the government, not by an individual minister.

MacDonald, the province's first female minister of finance, says her work as health minister for the last three years often had her working closely with Steele's department.

She says she will reach out to the business community as part of her briefing in the new portfolio.
