A couple in Saint John who tied the knot on Saturday didn't have far to go to catch the plane for their honeymoon.

"We wanted it to be last minute, so we can't get any more last minute than this,” said bride, Tiffany Evans. “So we decided we would just do it before we hopped on the plane."

Evans and her fiancé, Brad Iliffe, have been together for three and a half years. When it came to deciding where to tie the knot they made the decision to go south, but legally it was easier to sign the papers in Canada.

"We are still going to have a little ceremony down there and it will just be a symbolic one,” said Evans. “We wanted to sign the papers here because it's really complicated to do it down there."

This is the first time the airport has ever played host to a wedding.

"We were surprised, but on a day like today when we have the charter flights going south, there is already sort of a festive atmosphere around the place, so this just adds to the level of excitement," said Angela McLean of the Saint John Airport.

The couple invited around a dozen friends and family to witness the event.

Kim McCurdy officiated the wedding. She says marrying someone at an airport is a first for her.

"This is one of the most interesting locations I have done a wedding,” she said.

"We didn't know it was going to be this big of a deal,” said Evans. “It makes us just really excited, and we can’t wait."

Following the ceremony, the couple went through security and onto a flight for their honeymoon in Punta Cana.
