A tenant suffered first-degree burns after an apartment building caught fire in Dartmouth Sunday evening.

The fire started around 9 p.m. in a unit at the top of a four-storey building on Parker Street.

“We were just hanging out in my apartment and heard a couple loud crashes. I really didn’t think anything of it and went into the washroom and smoke was coming through the vent,” says tenant Kelly Warwick.

“Heard the fire alarms and went out in the hallway and quickly left because people were saying ‘fire, fire.’ I heard the sirens at the back of the building and realized that the apartment building was on fire.”

The building was evacuated and crews quickly managed to bring the fire under control.

Officials believe only one person was in the unit at the time of the fire. They were taken to hospital with first-degree burns on their hands.

The unit in which the fire started suffered structural and smoke damage while the apartment below suffered some water and minor smoke damage.

Tenants have since returned to their apartments.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
