Halifax Water crews are busy fixing a major water main break in Lower Sackville, N.S.

The break caused significant damage to a number of homes in the area and 10 to 15 homes are still without water.

The Halifax Water Commission doesn’t expect the break to be fixed until Friday morning.

They say the cold temperatures are slowing the repair process.

The pipe burst Thursday afternoon, releasing a torrent of water, which poured into yards and homes.

“I heard a roar in the backyard and I went out and my woodpile was all flooded. My backyard was flooded,” says one resident. “I’ve never seen a water main break like that.”

The water pressure was so powerful, it broke one home’s basement window.

“I had about six inches of water in my basement,” says another neighbour. “We’re just cleaning it up, mostly mud.”

Steve Craig, the area’s city councilor, says anyone whose home has sustained water damage can call 311.
