HALIFAX -- The Nova Scotia to Maine ferry service has released average daily passenger and vehicle counts for its first three weeks in service.

The Cat high-speed ferry operated by Bay Ferries says its daily average from July 1 to July 7 was 307 passengers and 106 automobiles travelling in both directions.

Those figures show a steady increase over the first two weeks of the service, which began June 15.

From June 15 to June 22 the ferry carried a daily average of 181 passengers and 78 cars, while the week of June 23 to June 30 saw daily averages of 285 passengers and 97 cars.

Bay Ferries says as a result of the traffic between Yarmouth, N.S., and Portland, Maine, about 1,200 nights have been booked to date in Nova Scotia accommodations as part of a vacation package it offers.

Bay Ferries took over the service this year after the Nova Scotia government dumped the previous operator when it failed to meet passenger targets, eating up $39.5 million in provincial subsidies.
