Halifax’s former mayor is back in municipal government, with a new job in Alberta.
Peter Kelly is the new chief administrative officer in Alberta’s Westlock County.
The municipality is located about an hour north of Edmonton and, according to the 2011 census, has a population of about 7,600 residents.
Kelly says the move will put him closer to his son and grandchild, who live in Calgary.
“It gives more of an opportunity to see more of them and also it still leaves me connected to the rest of the country,” says Kelly. “It is a fairly short flight if I need to go back and forth, but it is a country filled with vast opportunities and this is one I look forward to.”
Kelly was mayor from 2000 until 2012, when he announced he would not be seeking re-election.
Kelly started his new job on September 2.
