ST. BERNARD , N.S. - A six-year-old girl was hospitalized with serious injuries after she was struck by a vehicle on a southwestern Nova Scotia highway.

RCMP say a driver was heading south on Highway 1 in St. Bernard, about 30 kilometres north of Meteghan, when a child ran across the road just after 7:30 a.m. Friday.

Police say he was unable to avoid the girl because other children were on the roadside.

The injured girl was flown to a Halifax hospital by helicopter.
