KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia -- Canada's Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse are Olympic champions again.
The duo successfully defended their Olympic women's bobsled title Wednesday, putting down a pair of fast runs to edge American duo Elena Meyers and Lauryn Williams by just a tenth of a second.
Calgary's Humphries and Moyse, of Summerside, P.E.I., finished four-run time of three minutes 50.61 seconds at the Sanki Sliding Center.
Meyers and Williams entered the day leading by a comfortable 0.23-second margin after two runs. But they struggled control in their final two trips down the sliding course and couldn't maintain their lead over the consistent Canadians. They ended up with a time of 3:50.71.
"I never wish bad on people but I was thinking 'just make a few mistakes, please'," Humphries said.
The United States also won bronze, with Jamie Greubel and Aja Evans finishing a full second back of Humphries and Moyse.
Humphries teamed with Moyse to win Olympic gold four years ago at the Vancouver Games. She said this victory shows that the Canada-1 sled is a legitimate force to be dealt with.
"It's different. Winning in Vancouver, being at home, first Olympic gold for us - that was a dream come true," Humphries said. "But to be able to do it again and to be able to defend, it's less about a fluke and more that our plan and process and who we are as people really make the difference. That's a really great feeling."
Moyse said she didn't mind having to play catch up against the Americans.
"We've been behind all season but it was kind of a blessing in disguise," she said. "We always leave everything on the table. When we got out of the sled we weren't sure we had it because we can't control what the Americans do."
