Residents of a small community near Halifax are expressing shock after a young man was killed in a drive-by shooting early Monday morning.

Police say the 21-year-old man was walking along Hornes Road in Eastern Passage, N.S., with a woman around 12:45 a.m. when he was shot.

“A vehicle pulled up and shots were fired and the vehicle sped away on Hornes Road and last seen turning onto Cow Bay Road,” said RCMP Cpl. Dal Hutchinson.

The man was rushed to hospital, where he later died from his injuries. His identity has not been released.

The woman wasn’t injured.

Investigators don’t believe the shooting was a random incident, but that’s little comfort to people who live in the area, including local MLA Barbara Adams.

“I am praying to God they know who did this and they can be arrested right away because until we know that person is behind bars, none of us are going to sleep well tonight,” said Adams.

Residents who live in the area say it’s a safe community, so they were shocked to hear the news Monday morning.

“Quiet neighbourhood, you don’t normally see anything like that, or hear anything like that happening here,” said Kevin DeCoff, who lives on Hornes Road. “Everybody thinks it’s a great neighbourhood. No problems down here.”

“Surprised, and shocked, flabbergasted,” said resident Phil Latter. “I’m very sorry for the young man’s family, of course, and friends. It’s just terrible.”

Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect vehicle, which is described as a black, four-door Chevrolet car.

Investigators are also trying to determine how many people were in the car at the time of the shooting.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
