Cold winter months always present a challenge for Maritime food banks and it is the dedication of the volunteers that helps to ensure those in need have food on their plates.

At the First Baptist Church Food Bank in Dartmouth, Gerda Kerkhof has been a driving force, helping the less fortunate for the past 15 years.

“She's always in here very early in the mornings. She's willing to give up her time, selflessly,” says volunteer Lis Jackson.

Gerda has done everything from unloading trucks, stocking supplies, and most importantly, making sure no one is left hungry.

“Her mind is always here, even if she's away,” says Lis.

“She seems to know the clients. They come in, she knows what their needs are, what their special needs are, and she's built up a relationship in that respect,” says volunteer Brian van der Vaart.

A special relationship that isn't lost on the 50 or more families who rely on this food bank every week.

“Gerda is a blessing to myself and many others. If it weren't for Gerda and this food bank, many of us would not eat,” says client Susan MacPherson.

Gerda says it makes her happy to help those in need.

“It's just overwhelming and some of them end up crying because they have absolutely nothing and it just breaks my heart,” says Gerda.

Gerda’s help has gone above and beyond providing food. She has had an impact on a number of aspects of people’s lives, including Mark Decker. Under her patient leadership, Mark has been volunteering at the food bank for the last six years and even found a part-time job, with Gerda’s help.

“She's helped me with teamwork and all that stuff and confidence and she's made me very happy to be here,” says Mark.

After 15 years, Gerda has made the decision to retire at the beginning of this year. Her fellow volunteers and clients are sad to see her go, but appreciate all she has done over the years.

“It will be tough to say goodbye really, because it's been mine for 15 years and it's sort of nice to feel wanted and I've always wanted to help anyone who wants my help,” says Gerda.
