CONCEPTION HARBOUR, N.L. -- The mayor of Conception Harbour, N.L., says residents of his town are shaken after a woman fell to her death from a cliff along the scenic coastline there.
"It's a tight-knit community," Craig Williams said Monday.
Williams and the RCMP said the 64-year-old Ontario woman's body was found Saturday morning.
He said the woman had gone for a walk Friday evening while her husband had a nap, and she wasn't discovered missing until the next morning.
Williams said the couple had a vacation home in his community and would visit each summer and sometimes at Christmas.
Holyrood RCMP say the woman's body was found by local fishermen.
Police responded to the scene and were assisted by local fire department members due to the difficult terrain and location.
Police say the cause of death has yet to be determined, and the Holyrood Detachment is working with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
"The cliffs there, some of them are quite dangerous and quite steep," Williams said. "The road borders it. There are also grassy outcrops where you can walk out, but most the cliffs are jagged and high."
He said the town is looking at replacing some of the guardrails along the cliffside.
"We are going to have to look at signage now just as a warning. A lot of the bordering land on the ocean there is actually private property, but we still have to look at doing something," the mayor said.
The name of the woman has not been released.
