LIVERPOOL, N.S. -- A search and rescue official says there is no sign of anyone in distress along Nova Scotia's South Shore after a flare was reportedly spotted off Liverpool.

Maj. Martell Thompson, a spokesman for the Joint Rescue Co-ordinator Centre in Halifax, says the search has been called off and the case is closed.

RCMP, a Cormorant helicopter and a coast guard vessel were dispatched to the area early today after a resident reported seeing the flare go down south of Liverpool.

Thompson says thorough searches were conducted along the shoreline and the wharf, but nothing out of the ordinary was found.

He says no local vessels or people have been reported overdue.
