The head of Irving Shipbuilding in Halifax says the East Isle Shipyard in P.E.I. is high on the list of yards that could benefit from the $25-billion shipbuilding contract awarded Wednesday.
Jim Irving says it's too early to make guarantees, but he says the yard in Georgetown is an important piece of Irving's properties.
Irving told the Charlottetown Guardian: "We'll keep a sharp eye out for Georgetown on how they can be part of this effort. That's part of our plan."
The $25-billion contract makes Irving's yard in Halifax the main contractor for the Canadian navy's new fleet of warships.
It is expected to create a windfall of wealth for the local economy, boosting Nova Scotia's gross domestic product by nearly $900 million.
The East Isle Shipyard was closed last winter, throwing 100 Islanders out of work.
