Police are searching for a 26-year-old New Ross, N.S., man after his snowmobile broke through the ice in Kings County Saturday night.
Kings District RCMP say they received a call around 9:55 p.m. of a group of snowmobilers who ran into trouble while crossing Black River Lake.
Upon arrival, police determined three snowmobiles and their riders had gone through the ice. Two were rescued, but the third is still missing.
“Unfortunately one man is unaccounted for at this time and a search is ongoing for him,” said Const. Tammy Lobb of Nova Scotia RCMP.
Numerous local fire departments along with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre's helicopter also responded. Crews have been working ever since, but the conditions are challenging.
“There’s no thick ice in the area so emergency responders can’t walk out onto the ice, which is making it difficult,” said Lobb. “It’s very slushy, very thin ice with lots of water.”
Snowmobilers in the area say they know to avoid the narrow part of the lake because of its strong current. They say Saturday's snow may have made thin spots in ice hard to see.
The road isn't a designated trail, but it’s a popular spot for outdoor enthusiasts - including snowmobilers. Local residents say its beauty can be deceptive.
“It can be a dangerous lake, there’s no doubt about it,” said neighbour Denise Morine. “Even in the summer boating, we’re not quite used to it yet. We stick with friends.”
“When the conditions change, you just don’t know what’s going to happen.”
The two other riders were taken to hospital. Crews equipped to help with ice and water rescues gathered Sunday afternoon to continue the search.
