Hundreds of people took to the streets of Sydney River, Nova Scotia Sunday morning to remember Emma van Nostrand.

Three years ago, the Cape Breton girl died after she collapsed during the Toronto Marathon.

Doctors say her death was a result of a rare and undiagnosed heart condition.

Sunday's race helped promote an active and healthy lifestyle, something Emma took pride in.

"There's nothing that can really replace the death of your daughter, but at least this solidifies the impact she had while she was alive, the number of people she touched. Something good has come out of her death," said Emma's father, Steve van Nostrand.

The money raised from the run will be put into a scholarship fund in Emma's name.

To date, 69-thousand dollars has been raised for students at her former high school.

The family plans on opening a university scholarship for the first time in Emma's name next year.
