A smaller, more efficient bus is being tested on the roads in Greater Moncton.

The bus is shorter and has fewer seats, but the goal is to test it on routes with fewer passengers to save on fuel costs.

Codiac Transpo is testing the smaller bus on the Lewisville Route as part of a summer-long research study.

The bus is on loan from a dealership and is being tested for two weeks.

“The buses that we have today are 40 feet long, so this one that we are testing is 30 feet long so it’s a bit smaller, less seats,” says Angela Allain, general manager of Codiac Transpo.

“It would work on a route that has less demand, for example, for ridership.”

Codiac Transpo says the test is not related to a funding announcement last month of $2.7 million; that funding is for fleet replacement of the existing 40-foot models.
