The all clear was given this afternoon about 3:30 pm after what police thought was a standoff in Stewiacke, N.S. turned not to be.

RCMP spent most of the day in this usually quiet community asking people to stay inside as they tried to contact one or two people believed to be locked inside a nearby cabin.

Police say they believed one or two suspects involved in “major break and enters” were inside.

Jody Evans, who lives by the cabin says police told him to stay inside and lock his doors.

“It’s kind of a sickening feeling, considering that we don’t know what’s going on. There’s been so many stories and rumors around Upper Stewiacke this morning,” says Evans.

Adam Evans says the community was shaken up by the event.

“People were fearful and still are. It’s a high intensity situation. You saw the vehicles that were going through. This is something we don’t ever see unless it’s on television.”

At 3:30 this afternoon police went into the cabin, but they did not find the suspects inside.

Whether they were inside at all, or how they managed to get away is still unknown. Also, why the RCMP wanted them hasn’t been determined.

Search dogs and police officers are still in the area.
