Controversial singer Chris Brown is adding a second Maritime show to his summer tour, despite protests from groups in the Halifax area.

It was announced earlier this month that Brown would be performing at Dartmouth’s Alderney Landing on Aug. 31, sparking protests and angry outbursts on social media.

Several companies pulled their sponsorship of the Energy Rush concert after learning Brown was the headliner. Even Mayor Mike Savage weighed in on the controversy, saying the thought of Brown playing in his city made him feel “kind of sick.”

But the backlash didn’t stop Drop Entertainment Group from announcing Brown would also be headlining the Hot Summer Blast Festival in Saint John on Sept. 1.

The R & B star was sentenced to five years of probation and six months of community labour for assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009.

Much like Halifax, reactions to the announcement were mixed in Saint John. Some people were appalled to hear Brown would be performing at Harbour Stations, while others said he was just another entertainer.

But Sheri Coburn, the chair of Saint John’s Domestic Violence Community Action Group, says she hopes to see a backlash in Saint John as the news spreads.

“I’m hoping the supporters and the organizers and the promoters have a similar response to some of those across the country who have reengaged their support,” she says.

Brown is also performing at summer festivals in Toronto and Winnipeg, where a woman is protesting his upcoming concert by holding a fundraiser for domestic violence victims.

Drop Entertainment Group is producing all four events.

However, recent developments in the singer’s assault case could make it difficult for him to enter Canada; a Los Angeles judge revoked Brown’s probation due to a hit-and-run incident in which Brown was involved in May.

If a judge determines Brown did violate his probation, he could go to prison for four years. A hearing is scheduled for August.

Tickets for Hot Summer Blast Festival in Saint John go on sale Friday.
