Many dog owners are upset over a new sign telling them to keep pets on a leash at a provincial park in Halifax.

The sign was set up this week at Long Lake, but it was ripped down right in front of a CTV News camera on Wednesday.

By law, dogs must always be leashed in all provincial parks in Nova Scotia, but the rule hasn’t always been enforced. Often people have used the park as an off-leash area.

The Department of Natural Resources says it is simply responding to recent complaints about dogs. Owners say it’s getting more difficult to find off-leash areas in Halifax.

“This park is close to the city and it’s an easy park to get to,” explains dog owner Lori Soder. “It’s a great alternative to Point Pleasant Park if you want off-leash. It's also huge, so you can walk, and walk, and never run into people or other dogs. There’s a huge lake and a lot of private areas if people don’t like dogs. The dogs can have a long walk off leash and can swim for hours without bothering anybody.”

Some dog owners say they will continue to let their pets go off-leash on quiet trails. However, those caught doing it could face a fine of $176.
