A Maritime family is offering a $10,000 reward for the return of a pricey, custom-made race car after a utility trailer containing the car was stolen from a dealership in Lower Truro, N.S.

The owner of the car dealership believes the real target was the trailer, and that the thieves may not have realized what they were stealing.

“I think somebody’s bitten off more than they can chew, and are really trying to figure out what they’re going to do,” said Derek Lugar.

The utility trailer was stolen from the parking lot of the Volkswagen dealership on Meadow Drive sometime between 8:30 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. Friday.

Security cameras from nearby businesses appear to show a small minivan hauling the trailer out of the lot. The vehicle was last seen leaving the dealership turning right onto Robie Street, and then proceeding under the Highway 102 overpass

“It was rather unfortunate. Broad daylight; somebody came and decided they wanted the trailer better than we did,” said Lugar.

Matt Trivett, the owner of the $100,000 BMW race car, is originally from New Brunswick but is working in Europe. His father, John Trivett, says the custom-made car was special to the whole family.

“We’ve always raced as a family. We raced go-karts and cars when we were younger, so Matt needed a diversion to a very busy career, so this was kind of an expensive way to get there, but it was working very well,” said John Trivett.

The car isn’t insured for theft, meaning a large financial loss for Trivett.

Racing organizations and clubs across North America have been notified about the theft and provided with specific details about the vehicle.

“So that car’s not going to show up on a race track,” said John Trivett. “Parts wise, yeah maybe, they might disassemble it, but again, the parts are very unique.”

The Trivetts are offering a $10,000 reward for the return of the car. They’re asking anyone with information about the theft to contact local police or the RCMP, who are investigating.
