HALIFAX – Leighann Wichman, a founding member and Executive Director of The Youth Project in Halifax, has died earlier this week unexpectedly from unforeseen health circumstances.

The organization, which has been a prominent fixture in the local L.G.B.T.Q community, released the news of her death on Friday.

A spokesman for The Youth Project says that its regular scheduled programs and services will be closed for the week ahead.

A memorial service for Wichman, who was originally from Ontario, is planned for Tuesday in Halifax. The spokesman says that donations to the organization will be accepted in lieu of flowers.

The Youth Project was formed in 1993. As an independent non-profit charity, it has provided support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth in the community.

Wichman worked for The Youth Project for over 20 years.
