The defence lawyer in the case of a Halifax lawyer convicted of sexual assault says his client has filed a notice of appeal of his conviction.

Phil Star spoke after Lyle Howe received his three-year jail sentence on Wednesday in Nova Scotia Supreme Court.

Howe was earlier found guilty by a jury of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman in March 2011.

He said during his trial that he had consensual sex with the woman.
