A man has been charged following a shooting and standoff in Point Aconi, N.S.

Police say John William MacNeil, 46, appeared in Sydney provincial court Friday morning to face a charge of attempted murder.

MacNeil was arrested after surrendering to police at his home on Point Aconi Road Thursday morning.

Police say they were alerted to a possible shooting around 3 a.m. after a 24-year-old North Sydney man arrived at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his leg.

After speaking to witnesses, police determined the victim had been at a home on Point Aconi Road when he was allegedly shot by a man who lives next door.

Officers contained the area after the suspect barricaded himself inside his home. They spent close to two hours negotiating with the man Thursday morning.

He eventually surrendered to police around 11:30 a.m.

Officers later executed a search warrant at both homes and seized several items.

Police say MacNeil and his alleged victim are known to one another, but wouldn’t speculate on a possible motive for the shooting.

The incident remains under investigation.
