The people of Montague, P.E.I. are rallying to help support the families of two murder victims.

Brent and Brendon McGuigan were shot and killed on St. Mary’s Road near Montague last month.

Now more than 180 items, including vacations, lobster and hockey jerseys are up for auction online to raise money for the McGuigan family.

One of those items is a recliner from a local furniture store.

“Hopefully it will raise quite a few dollars for the cause,” says store owner Barry Beck. “In a small community you’ve got to help family and friends when tough times come.”

Both Brent and Brendon were the breadwinners for their families. Brendon left behind three children and another is on the way.

The community is hoping the donations for the auction will help give the family a financial boost during their time of need.

“It has totally restored my faith in humanity,” says auction organizer Ambyr Macdonald.

MacDonald and Pamela Martin are organizing the auction as well as a dance for Saturday night.

Their initial goal was to raise $10,000, but the pair has tripled that figure.

"The fact that something like this could happen in such a small community, everybody knows everybody here, and then to have everyone join together is just incredible," says Martin.

People can bid on the auction items up until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

“I’ve had lots of people contact me asking where they can send money because they can’t be here for the auction or the dance, but they still want to help,” says MacDonald.

Beck says he, like most people in Montague, knew the victims and is proud he is seeing so many people step up to help their families.

"In a small community you got to help family and friends when tough times come."
