HALIFAX -- Nova Scotia Power says a new record has been set for wind power generation in the province.
For one hour early Wednesday morning, the utility says 50 per cent of the province's electricity came from wind.
The company acknowledges the new record was achieved during a period when demand for electricity is low -- between 3 and 4 a.m. -- and that there were high winds at the time.
Nova Scotia Power says the spike in wind generation is credited to the newly opened South Canoe Wind Farm in the municipality of Chester.
The 34-turbine wind farm is expected to provide enough energy for about 32,000 homes.
Nova Scotia has legislated that 25 per cent of electricity must come from renewable resources in 2015 and 40 per cent by 2020.
