HALIFAX -- The Nova Scotia government has introduced legislation that it says will ensure marine renewable energy projects are developed in a responsible manner.

The province says the legislation would make sure there is consultation in areas where the industry will be developed and establish a licensing and permitting system for the development of marine renewable energy generators in those areas.

It would also give the energy minister the authority to develop regulations for the construction, installation and operation of projects.

Energy Minister Michel Samson says tidal resources are poised to make significant contributions to the province's economy and will provide a new source of power.
