Nova Scotia Emergency Health Services is asking for the public’s help in finding a medical pouch they say could be extremely dangerous in the wrong hands.

A paramedic crew noticed the small black pouch, which carries medication, was missing from an ambulance while they were travelling between Liverpool and Halifax.

“The medications that we carry on our ambulances, of course they’re designed to be delivered by health-care professionals and they can be very, very dangerous,” said Jeff Fraser, EHS’s director of operations.

Fraser said they learned about the missing pouch Tuesday morning.

Part of the challenge they’re facing is the distance the paramedics covered during their shift.

“Of course we spent most of the day kind of retracing where the ambulance and the crew was, all the different patients that they interacted with and, unfortunately, we were unable to find it,” Fraser said.

They called in police to help with the search and are now reaching out to the public for help, asking anyone who finds it to call EHS or local police.

“This was obviously a mistake within our system and, of course, like with anything that ever happens in our system that’s an exception, we'll complete our investigation and do a full quality review process to make sure that we understand, if there were gaps, what we could do to bridge those gaps in the future,” Fraser said.
