Fabio is a micro-mini pet pig who’s not as mini as he should be. In fact, at 117 pounds, he weighs twice what he should.

Now his owner has put him on a diet.

“Well, his momma’s been feeding a bit too much. He’s only supposed to have a quarter-cup of his pig food in the morning and a quarter-cup at night,” said owner Sally Cormier.

Cormier decided last month that she needed to get Fabio back on track. A vet helped her set up a weight maintenance program for the porky pig, and he has lost eight pounds in just two weeks.

“That is definitely a step in the right direction for Fabio, and that is definitely a step in the right direction for his family,” said veterinary assistant Christy Reicker. “His family did a wonderful job with him. That is 100 per cent the key to weight loss, is being on board as a family and getting involved.”

Fabio is a bit of a minor celebrity wherever he goes. He and Cormier spend the summers in New Brunswick and the winters in Nunavut. She says back home, friends drop by to see him and give him treats to do tricks.

“He shakes a hoof, he does tricks, he plays the piano,” Cormier said. “Everybody falls in love with him the minute they meet him.”

Fabio goes in for another weigh-in next week.
