SAINT JOHN – Dennis Oland will return to court Wednesday as the preliminary hearing resumes in the case of his father’s murder.

Richard Oland was a prominent businessman and a member of the Order of Canada. His family is best known as the owners of Moosehead Breweries.

The 69-year-old was found dead in his Saint John office on July 7, 2011. During the initial investigation, Saint John police Chief Bill Reid said Oland died after repeated blows.

There was no indication if a murder weapon had been collected during the investigation.

Dennis Oland is charged with second-degree murder in his father's death.

Since Dennis Oland’s preliminary hearing began in May 2014, evidence presented during the hearings has been protected by a publication ban. This ban prevents any media to report on any details related to the case.

The hearing was originally supposed to finish last month, but lawyers asked for more time because the case is progressing slower than expected.

The added court days include eight extra days in August, and three extra days in October.
