A teen is facing charges for allegedly trying to run over students with his car outside Citadel High School in Halifax.

Police responded to the school on Trollope Street around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Investigators say three students were crossing the road at Ahern Avenue and Bell Road in a marked crosswalk when they exchanged words with a 16-year-old male driver.

Police allege the driver made a U-turn on Ahern Avenue and steered his car towards the students, who were on the sidewalk, walking towards the school.

Police say the vehicle jumped the curb and narrowly missed the students. The driver then fled the area at a high speed.

There were no reported injuries and the driver was arrested without incident when he returned to school around 10:30 a.m. His vehicle was also seized.

The teen is due to appear in Halifax provincial youth court to face charges of dangerous driving and three counts of assault with a weapon.

Police say the incident isn’t random as the driver and students are known to one another.
