Update: CTV News has learned that the charges against Ryan Hamilton were withdrawn at a court hearing on Sept. 7, 2017. Chris Hansen, director of communications for the Public Prosecution Service, said the Crown determined there was no realistic prospect of conviction.

CTV News has learned a Dalhousie law student has been arrested and charged with sexual assault following a five-month police investigation.

Halifax Regional Police arrested third-year law student Ryan Hamilton at police headquarters Friday morning.

Investigators say a woman came forward to police in May alleging she was assaulted two years ago.

Police allege the offence took place at a residence in south-end Halifax on Dec. 27, 2014.

They say the complainant and accused were known to each other.

“It is a complex investigation and we want to make sure the victim is fully informed about the process,” said Const. Diane Woodworth of Halifax Regional Police.

Police won't confirm the identity of the person charged, but a number of sources have told CTV News Ryan Hamilton is a Dalhousie law student and was charged with sexual assault Friday.

Dalhousie University tells CTV News that police notified them that a Dalhousie student was charged with sexual assault.

“Dalhousie takes sexual violence extremely seriously and the university's goals relate to prevention and response, as well as support," a university spokesperson said in a statement.

CTV News was unable to contact Ryan Hamilton for comment.

University officials would not say whether the student would be suspended from school.

The accused is set to appear in Halifax provincial court on Nov. 23.

The allegation hasn't been tested in court.
