CHARLOTTETOWN -- Charlottetown's Queen Elizabeth Hospital has put visitor restrictions in place because of an outbreak of an antibiotic resistant bacteria in one of its medical nursing units.
The hospital says a higher than usual number of patients in Unit 3 have tested positive for Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus.
Hospital medical director Dr. Rosemary Henderson says all patients in the nursing unit and those being admitted are being screened for the bacteria.
Henderson says those testing positive are being placed on isolation precautions and staff are conducting enhanced cleaning in the unit.
As a result visitations are being restricted to immediate family members with only two visitors allowed at one time per patient.
Visits will also be limited to 15 minutes in duration and visitors will be required to clean their hands before and after entering a patient's room.
