About 1,400 residents in Saint John’s north end are under a boil water advisory due to a water main break in the city.
Saint John Water customers east of the intersection of University and Millidge avenues were without water for most of the day.
The University of New Brunswick campus and Canadian blood services were also affected by the break.
“What we did this morning is we had a quick meeting,” says Michelle Thibodeau of Canadian Blood Services. “We talked about the impacts to the donors. We decided those were minimal so that we could go ahead and continue. The main thing impacted is our washroom facilities, but other than that, it’s not a huge impact.”
The Saint John Regional Hospital sits amongst the houses and businesses affected by the water main break but Horizon Health says they were not affected because they have a backup water source.
Eastbound lanes on University Avenue were closed for several hours and traffic was rerouted to the westbound lane, causing some traffic delays.
Crews have completed their work on the damaged pipe but a boil order will remain in effect until the end of the week.
