The family of a Nova Scotia man murdered two years ago is asking the public for help in solving the case as they speak out about his death for the first time.

Emergency crews responded to a fire at a cabin off Highway 374 near Sheet Harbour on Dec. 12, 2012. The remains of 59-year-old Earle Stewart and 22-year-old Matthew Hebb were found in the rubble.

Investigators determined the fire had been deliberately set and their deaths were ruled a double homicide, although police have not said how they died.

“I lost my baby and there is nothing that will ever bring him back,” says Hebb’s mother, Kirtley Beaver.

Hebb and Stewart were neighbours and friends on Herring Cove Road in Halifax. Stewart owned the cabin in Sheet Harbour and Hebb’s family says the men drove there to get Christmas trees off Stewart’s lot.

Police arrested two people within days of the incident but they were released and no one has ever been charged in the case.

“I would like to see some justice served. Someone needs to pay for what they did,” says Beaver. “That’s what I’m asking the public to do. If you know something, please make that phone call.”

The family built crosses at the site to honour the victims and to remind the community of what took place at the cabin that day.

They are also putting up posters in the area, asking anyone with information to come forward.

Brittany Veith says her brother was a loving son, fiancé and a father to a little boy and that his death has torn her family apart.

“It didn’t matter what type of mood you were in, he always made sure you could smile,” says Veith.

“He was a good boy,” says Beaver. “He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Anyone with information about the murders is asked to contact any RCMP office, Halifax Regional Police or Crime Stoppers.
