Four women representing Canada from Chester, N.S., won the women’s side of the Canadian Junior Curling Championship in Denmark on Sunday.

Skip Mary Fay and her teammates Karlee Burgess, Janique LeBlanc and Kristen Clarke captured a 7-4 victory against the United States.

“Just to be able to bring that gold medal home and do it beside my best friends - we are on top of the world,” said Fay.

Fay was born and raised in Chester, while the other players have roots in Truro and Halifax. The team only lost one game the entire tournament.

“It's just amazing a group of young ladies crowned the world champions and they're from Chester,” said Jim Mason, president of the Chester Curling Club.

Fay's father, Brent Fay, wasn't able to make the tournament, but didn't miss a game.

“When Mary and Karlee won the youth Olympics this year, I thought, ‘Wow, it can't get any bigger or better than this,’ but I think this is bigger,” said Brent Fay.

The Chester Curling Club is hosting a party for the team and their supporters, but first they want to give the young women time to get settled and catch up on their studies.

“They are amazing girls on and off the ice,” said Beth Atherton of the Chester Curling Club. “It was incredible to see them put the maple leaf on their back and compete at this level.”

Their achievements are already inspiring the club's other junior players.

“We are from the same rink, we use the same equipment, if she can, who knows, maybe I will be able to do it too,” said curler Craig Weagle.
