A New Brunswick man has pleaded guilty to five charges related to shale gas protests last fall.

Jason Augustine appeared in Moncton provincial court on May 26. He pleaded guilty to a charge of mischief, two counts of obstructing a police officer and one count of assaulting a police officer.

The charges were laid in connection with incidents during a shale gas protest near Rexton on Oct. 17, 2013. Police say the protest turned violent and firearms, improvised explosive devices and other weapons were used.

The 34-year-old Elispogtog First Nation man also pleaded guilty to mischief in connection with an incident on July 27, 2013 near Harcourt. Police say Augustine was blocking shale gas testing equipment.

Augustine has been sentenced to 18 months’ probation and is ordered to remain at least one kilometre away from shale gas protests and shale gas exploration activities.
