HALIFAX -- The Nova Scotia government has approved the participation of three companies in a pilot program to test and evaluate Segway use on the province's streets and sidewalks.

The successful participants are Segway Nova Scotia in Halifax, McGinley's Yard and Garden Equipment Inc. in Truro and Chester Marine Services Ltd. of Chester.

The Transportation Department says applications can still be submitted to participate for the remainder of the pilot period, which ends in January, 2016.

Under the pilot program Segways won't be allowed to operate at speeds faster than 20 kilometres an hour or travel on roads with a speed limit higher than 60 kilometres an hour.

Following the pilot's conclusion the department will determine if amendments will be made to the Motor Vehicle Act to permanently allow Segway use in the province.

Under the current law Segways are not allowed on public roads.
