Police in Fredericton are investigating a possible hate crime after a swastika was scrawled on the front door of a synagogue. Police believe the vandals struck the Sgoolai Israel Synagogue overnight Sunday.

Rabbi Yosef Goldman discovered the swastika, which was traced in black and surrounded by a black circle, when he first arrived at the synagogue Monday morning.

Goldman has since cleaned up the graffiti, but a note was taped to the door Tuesday morning, expressing respect for Fredericton's Jewish community.

Goldman says the community is saddened by the attack.

"They're upset, but they don't want it to go out of hand," he says. "They don't want to make a big deal out of something that, right now, looks like a one-time accident."

The synagogue has asked the Fredericton Police Force to investigate the incident as a hate crime.
