FREDERICTON - The New Brunswick government says the Princess Margaret Bridge in Fredericton will remain closed for about a month longer than expected.

The bridge was closed in May for repair work -- part of an $80 million rehabilitation of the 52-year-old span.

But Transportation Minister Claude Williams says work has been delayed by all the wet weather and other issues arising from the repairs.

He says the summer rain has made it impossible to sandblast and paint the metal components on schedule.

The wet weather has also made it difficult to put down a waterproofing membrane on the deck.

The bridge, used by about 20,000 drivers a day, was expected to re-open in early September.

That's been pushed back to mid-October.
