HALIFAX - Nova Scotia's government says regulations are in effect as of today that require daycare workers to have their criminal record checks up to date.

Education Department spokesman Gary Andrea says under the old rules a staff person who didn't have an up-to-date criminal record check could continue working for up to 90 days with children.

He says now if an inspector determines a child care worker doesn't have their paperwork in order they won't be allowed to work with children until they do.

The new regulations were proclaimed by an order in council yesterday and begin to be enforced starting today.

The new rules also replace the criminal-record check with the vulnerable-sector check in June 2015, and that must be renewed every five years.

The vulnerable sector check goes beyond the criminal record check, to include a search of the pardoned sex offender database.
