The search for a missing Pictou County teen is entering its second week. New Glasgow Police say investigators are following up on tips and information they have received from the public today.
They are also trying to determine if items recovered in the search effort belong to 19-year-old Amber Kirwan, who disappeared early October 9.
"During the searches throughout the week, items of interest have been located and are being processed by forensic services to determine their evidentiary value in relation to the missing person's case," says Const. Ken MacDonald, a spokesman with New Glasgow Police.
MacDonald says search teams from across the province have joined police investigators, RCMP, K-9 units and forensic services as they continue to search wooded areas throughout Pictou County.
Divers were seen scouring the waters near Pictou Landing Sunday, while ground crews searched wooded areas near Scotsburn, but the efforts failed to turn up any sign the teen.
Kirwan was last seen at Dooly's pool hall in New Glasgow on October 9.
She had planned to meet her boyfriend at Big Al's, a nearby convenience store, and Kirwan's friends say she left the pool hall around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, intending to walk to the store.
But her boyfriend, Mason Campbell, says Kirwan never made it to the store.
Campbell says he has spoken with investigators twice, for a total of about four hours, but he says he has nothing to do with Kirwan's disappearance.
"That's the last thing I want to hear going around," says Campbell. "That doesn't help any bit of this situation."
Family and friends have been plastering posters across Pictou County, asking anyone to come forward with information on Kirwan's disappearance. Posters have also made their way to other parts of Nova Scotia, including Halifax and Cape Breton, as people from around the province show their support.
Large crowds took part in candlelight vigils last week, and more than 100 people gathered Saturday to form a human ribbon in Kirwan's honour.
"It's all for her, it's all for support," says event organizer Sammi Fralick. "We're all getting together to show that we're still here for her and still looking for her."
Supporters wore green – Kirwan's favourite colour – to the event and many released balloons that were donated and sold to raise money for her family. More than $2,000 was raised from the balloon-a-thon.
A $5,000 reward has been offered for information that leads directly to Kirwan's whereabouts. Family and friends collected the reward money through donations.
Meanwhile, police are asking that the public not draw any conclusions when they notice police conducting searches throughout Pictou County.
"The public will view several searches throughout Pictou County, and as a result, if there is any official information, it will come from the police in terms of getting out there," says MacDonald. "We're asking the public to listen to the police and make sure the proper information is out there."
Several Facebook groups have been created, appealing to the public for help in locating Kirwan, but police say they will be updating the public on information relating to the case through press releases, and not through social media sites.
Friends say Kirwan was last seen wearing a blue and black shirt and flat, black shoes. She is roughly five-foot-one inches tall and weights around 130 pounds. Kirwan has brown hair, hazel eyes and two tattoos – a dragonfly on her back, and a star on her right foot.
Anyone with information on her whereabouts has been asked to call New Glasgow Police or Crime Stoppers.
