Gold medal fever has gripped Prince Edward Island, home of Olympic bobsledder Heather Moyse.

Moyse and her teammate, Kaillie Humphries of Calgary, successfully defended their Olympic women's bobsled title Wednesday, putting down a pair of fast runs to edge American duo Elena Meyers and Lauryn Williams by just a tenth of a second.

The duo also won Olympic gold four years ago at the Vancouver Games.

Many Islanders stopped what they were doing and huddled around their TV and computer screens Wednesday as they cheered on the Summerside native and her teammate.

“It was amazing, the place went crazy,” said Bruce MacDougall, deputy mayor of Summerside. “They did a phenomenal feat to win it. It just proved they are the golden girls.”

“I was at the hairdresser and we ran into her kitchen to see it and we just, we were just elated,” says Summerside resident Norma Steele. “It was great.”

Summerside residents are getting used to celebrating gold medal performances. The community hosted a big party after the Vancouver Olympics and another one is in the works to celebrate Moyse’s win at the Sochi Olympics.

“She wears Summerside and P.E.I. and all of Canada on her sleeve and she makes us all proud, so yeah, we’re going to have another party, and it will be a good one,” says MacDougall.
