HALIFAX - Premier Darrell Dexter says Nova Scotia will work to address a shortage of skilled tradespeople now that the Halifax shipyard has won a $25-billion federal shipbuilding contract.
Dexter says his government intends to increase its marketing of educational and work opportunities in order to recruit people to the workforce.
He says the main effort will focus on bringing home tradespeople who are working in Western Canada.
Dexter says the task should be easier now that steady, well-paying jobs can be offered once the Irving-owned shipyard begins work on the new warships.
He says the province will also promote training programs at the Nova Scotia Community College in order to increase the labour pool.
The premier says the idea of using well-paying jobs as an incentive to increase immigration to the province is also something the province is considering.
